Warwickshire Bears
Warwickshire Bears Wheelchair Basketball Academy plays in the GBWBA leagues. Our teams our made up of players of all skill levels. Some members have played for GB and some other players are just starting out. Our teams are chosen by skill level which we hope means that all players get court time each season.
We are a registered charity and have been self funded since we were Stratford Players. After many phone calls and letters trying to find funding from a sponsor we found that it limited our options for a sponsor because we had Stratford as part of the team name and the fact that only two players lived in Stratford so we felt it was in our interest to change our name to Warwickshire Bears.
The team trains and practices on Tuesdays 7:30pm till 9:30pm for advanced players and Fridays 6pm till 8pm for development playersat Warwickshire College, Henley in Arden Centre, Stratford Road Henley In Arden, Warwickshire, B95 6AB
If you are interested please contact the teams coach, Tom Masterson on Tel: 0121 705 0308, 07946 518354 (Mob). We can loan you a chair so that you can have a go. There is no reason not to come along as anyone can play.
We have now been given the chance to use the new court in the Henley in Arden College. As soon as the court is ready we are transferring and will be training there on Tuesdays from 8pm till 10pm.
Who Can Play Wheelchair Basketball?
Wheelchair basketball can be played by anyone, even those without a disability. Wheelchair basketball can be played by able bodied, right to those with knee or leg injuries and of course people who use wheelchairs in their everyday life.
The sport is made fair by it’s points system. Each player is assessed when he/she registers to play. They are marked from 1 point to 5 points depending on their disability.
The coach is allowed so many points on the court at once. The number of points changes from division to division, the coach gets less points the higher the division. The idea is that teams usually have a good mix of players so when in a game you are usually matched up against someone on your point level.
The academy is currently looking for more female players as one thing we would like to add is a female team. We currently have a number of female members who get pitch time however if there were more female players we could add this to our academy status.
Also we would love to have a junior team. We would have a junior training session allowing for skills and development so we need more players. Juniors who are willing to train hard and want to have some fun and meet new friends would be welcomed. They could have a great future in the sport and even aspire to be a future olympic star for GB.
We also hope to enter another team this season into the Development League where new players can gain court time and also the junior team members can try out playing in the adult side of the game. Last year the team did really well and made it to the play offs with the youngest team.
The hardest part of starting something new is that first phone call so please make the effort and start changing your life today!!
